What Causes Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is often the result of a cold or allergies. It can also be caused by nasal polyps, a deviated septum, facial trauma or complications from tumors or immune system disorders.

How Is Sinusitis Diagnosed and Treated?

Your doctor will begin by asking about the length and duration of your symptoms. They will also perform a physical exam focused on your nose and face for tenderness and looking inside your nose. The diagnostic process may also include imaging tests, allergy tests and cultures of nasal and sinus discharge.

If a diagnosis of sinusitis is made, our team will guide you through the next steps. Acute sinusitis will typically resolve on its own, and symptoms can be managed with:

  • Over-the-counter pain medications
  • Allergy medications
  • Saline nasal spray

For cases of chronic sinusitis, your doctor will work with you to explore treatment options, which may include treating underlying conditions like allergies or asthma, corticosteroid sprays to reduce inflammation in the sinuses or surgery to correct a deviated septum or remove nasal polyps. A procedure called balloon sinuplasty, which further opens the sinuses, may also be recommended.
